Our Suggestions

Here’s what we’d recommend to get started in this industry...

  • Read as much as you can about alpacas and the industry (see section on "Reference Books").

  • Join AOBA and/or your closest regional affiliate and attend at least one meeting. AOBA membership will automatically provide you with a subscription to "Alpacas Magazine" which contains much helpful and educational information.

  • Utilize the Internet to learn about alpacas and to explore various farms online. This may help you target specific farms for later visits.

  • Visit as many farms as possible. You will learn different approaches to herd management and take away at least one or two good ideas from every farm you visit.

  • Attend some alpaca shows.  They are available across the country and will give you an opportunity to meet a variety of breeders and see some of their stock first-hand.

  • Attend an educational seminar.  There are a number of workshops available that range from a basic "Alpacas 101" course to more involved courses on a variety of topics.
